The earliest works by John Constable date back to the 18th century. His father was an entrepreneur who ran flour mills and windmills in the towns of Flatford and East Bergholt. His father also ran a string of lighters along the River Stour and two sea-going Thames barges between London and Mistley Wharf. Constable’s work often featured canal scenes, and his father’s business interests continued to inspire his work.
Although Constable was still quite young, he produced some of his most powerful paintings during a turbulent period of English politics. His early paintings reveal his meticulous observations of nature, with careful renderings of trees and the sky. While he didn’t always achieve such detail, he made sure to capture the truth of what he saw. He also carefully used the palette to represent his surroundings. The palette of colours that Constable chose is generally restrained, consisting primarily of browns and greens.
