Many people think of the famous starry night over the Rhone as the most popular painting by the artist, but it is the other works that really capture the essence of the famous Dutch artist. Whether you’re an art lover or simply appreciate beautiful paintings, there is sure to be a van Gogh painting for you.
Vincent van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, in 1853, a small town near the Belgian border. His parents were Protestant ministers Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. At the age of 16, he started working at an art gallery in Hague and later moved on to Paris and London. Sadly, his interest in becoming an art dealer waned and he sought a different career. In 1870, he was recruited to work as a missionary, where he helped a group of coal miners. He donated many of his clothes to the miners, and left his Dutch Reformed Church to become an artist.
One of the most famous Van Gogh paintings is Sunflowers. It was painted in July 1888, the same month that Van Gogh committed suicide. His suicide was supposedly triggered by the painting. Sunflowers were considered “worthless” by some, but he loved them and believed that they convey a feeling of welcome, belonging, and happiness. The Sunflowers are so beautiful that they can’t be reproduced in the same way.
