Artist Louise Abbema was born into a prestigious family. She was the daughter of Viscount Emile Abbema and the granddaughter of the celebrated Theatre-Francais actress Louise Contat. Her grandfather was a count of Narbonne who served as Minister of War under Louis XVI. Abbema studied painting with history painter Louis Devedeux, and later went on to study art under the great artists such as Charles Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner, and Carolus-Duran.

At the age of 18, Louise Abbema painted a portrait of the great actress Sarah Bernhardt. Bernhardt, like many other female artists, was a well-known performer of the time, starring in early silent movies and on stage in Europe and America. As a young artist, Abbema continued painting throughout her life. She was also an excellent sculptor, writer, and station master.

In addition to portraits, Abbema also painted landscapes and genre scenes. Her work reflected the influence of Japanese and Chinese painters, but it was also influenced by French impressionists such as Edouard Manet. Abbema often depicted flowers in her works, including the famous “Seasons.” She was also a skilled printmaker and sculptor, and made regular contributions to the Gazette des Beaux-Arts.
