Thomas Moran was an English painter who emigrated to the United States in 1844. The son of a handloom maker, he began his career as an apprentice at a wood engraving shop. While working at the store, Moran began exploring watercolor and sketching, and eventually found a job as an illustrator at Scribner’s Monthly. He also became acquainted with the work of English painter J. M. W. Turner, who greatly influenced the young Moran.
Although his style and subject matter were largely unfashionable before the Civil War, Moran’s patronage had a lasting effect on western exploration. The completion of the railroad in 1869 changed the landscape forever, allowing travelers to look forward to seeing the wonders of the West. Aside from his paintings, he was an influential member of the “second generation” of American painters. His work is now part of the collection of the Santa Fe Collection of Southwestern Art.
