Born in 1815 in London, John Absolon was an experienced figurative painter and portrait artist. His early years were spent painting theatrical scenery in London. After studying in Paris for four years, he returned to London. He then became a member of the New Water-Colours Society, which was founded in 1832. His work included a wide variety of subjects, including landscapes, scenes from Italy and Switzerland, portraits, and photos.
Absolon was described by Art Journal critic James Dafforne as ‘one of our most talented figure painters working in water-colours.’ His paintings are notable for their natural treatment of his subjects, pencilling that is at once free but careful, and brilliant colouring that is devoid of exaggeration.
