Born in Budapest, Hungary, Vilmos Aba studied at the Art School and with Adolf Fenyes. He trained in the College of Fine Arts in Hungary from 1912 to 1914. He enlisted in the Austro-Hungarian Army, serving on the Eastern Front during World War I. His early work shows similarities to the Hungarian Group of Eight, while later work is distinctly associated with the Activists. In spite of his many influences, Vilmos Aba Novak developed a distinctive style that earned him a strong international reputation.
While studying at the Art School, Novak spent his summers in the countryside, painting in the picturesque villages of Baia Mare and Szolnok. His first exhibition of paintings occurred in 1924. The Hungarian Academy sent him to Rome as a Fellow and he became one of the leading representatives of the “Roman School” in Hungarian painting. He also taught at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts from 1939 until his death in 1958.
