This video features 30 of Willem van Aelst’s most important works. This artist was a major figure in the Dutch Republic during the “Golden Age” of Dutch painting. Then, in the 18th century, he was largely forgotten, but in the 20th century his work was recognized as a major force in Dutch painting.
Willem van Aelst was born in Delft in 1627 and studied under his uncle, who was associated with the court of the Princes of Orange in The Hague. At age 16, he enrolled in the guild of St. Luke in Delft, and a decade later he took a sojourn in Italy and France, which had a profound effect on his career. His later works show his influences from these places, albeit in a more personal way.
