Albrecht Altdorfer was an artist from Bavaria. He was a member of the Danube School and a pioneer in landscape painting. He used landscape styles native to the region as his source of inspiration and created a tone and mood that is often difficult to imitate. His paintings are now exhibited in the Israel Museum.
Many of his paintings were inspired by mythological and historical subjects. Some were biblical and historical, while others focused on religious themes. His best religious scenes are known for their intense lighting and glowing colours. They depict the intimate relationship between Christ and his mother, as well as the various saints. Probably his best known work is the Sebastian Altar at St. Florian’s Priory near Linz, which displays the Stations of the Cross.
