If you’re interested in French art, you’ve probably heard of Louis Abel-Truchet, a painter, etcher, and lithographer who was born in Versailles. His paintings are largely about turn-of-the-century Paris, where he painted portraits of young, elegant Parisians and ordinary scenes from the city. Many of his paintings are recognizable as masterpieces of the Belle Epoque period, a period which was closely linked to the development of modern art.

Abel-Truchet studied at the Academy Julian with Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebvre. In 1891 he exhibited his paintings at the Salon d’automne and the Salon des Artistes Francais. He also had his work featured in the Salon d’automne in 1919. His paintings also became the subject of a book by Belgo-French architect Frantz Jourdain, who called them “magical pictures.”

The artist was also a well-known soldier during the First World War, and volunteered for the army at the age of 57. He led a section of the First Regiment du Genie and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. During his time in the army, he created lithographs and paintings documenting his experiences. Sadly, he died a few months before the war ended.
