Henri Rousseau was a self-taught artist from the northwestern region of France. Born in Laval, Rousseau eventually moved to Angers with his family, working as a tax collector and customs clerk. He later earned the nickname Le Douanier, and continued working as a clerk, producing his first artwork around 1861. This was only the beginning of his creative career, and he would eventually move to Paris.
Although Henri Rousseau’s paintings are often characterized by a surreal quality, they also convey a sense of wonder. Although he never travelled outside of France, his paintings depict a range of natural scenes, from tropical jungles to wild animals. Although Rousseau never traveled outside of France, he drew inspiration from botanical gardens, travel books, and the landscapes of the city.
