French artist Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, near Paris. His parents had four children: his eldest brother was Jean, and his second brother was Auguste. After the death of his first two children, his father and three younger brothers moved to Paris. The family moved around France, often to warmer climates and thermal treatments. In 1848, Renoir attended a Catholic school. He was admired for his talent and joined the school choir.
After spending much of his time painting landscapes in his home, Renoir continued to paint in a variety of locations, and was able to nurture his relationship with Monet. Renoir also met Paul Durand-Ruel and Gustave Caillebotte. In 1873, he exhibited his paintings in the Salon des Refuses, a French art exhibition that featured rejected works. In 1874, he participated in the first Impressionist exhibition and in subsequent shows, including those at Hotel Drouot.
In the early 1880s, Renoir traveled to the south and the Italian peninsula. While in Naples, he worked on a portrait of the composer Richard Wagner, among other subjects. During this time, he also painted three masterpieces: A Flower Girl at the Lake, Young Girls at the Piano, and The Screaming Bride. The Louvre’s permanent collection of Renoir’s paintings is a masterpiece.
Renoir’s portraits were renowned for their nudity. His fascination with the female form set him apart from other landscape artists and he began to obtain portrait commissions. Renoir was introduced to upper-middle class society by a publisher named Georges Charpentier. This led to numerous portrait commissions, which include women and children.
