Raphael Sanzio was born in Urbino, Italy, and was apprenticed to a painter in the city’s Ducal Palace. He began painting at age eleven, and attracted attention. He was invited to study under Perugino and developed his unique style and technique. The Oddi altarpiece, ‘Marriage of the Virgin’, finished in 1504, inspired the artist to change his approach to his works.

His talent for painting religious scenes was soon recognized. Pope Gregory VI hired him to paint his private library. As a result, many other artists were hired to help him complete the project. In addition to completing the work in his own library, Raphael also painted portraits and cabinet paintings. After this, he traveled to Siena, where he worked with Pinturicchio. After completing the Stanza dell’Incendio fresco, he served as the Pope’s chief architect and built several palaces. This work continues to be on display in the Vatican today.

Although Raphael Sanzio is considered to be the most celebrated artist of the Renaissance, he has been widely appreciated and valued for his many works. His paintings of the same period show a variety of styles and techniques. A study of the history of the Renaissance can help you appreciate the art of this master.
