Often associated with the Hudson River School, Winslow Homer’s landscapes are often considered atypical for their simplicity and anti-European attitude. While these paintings seem undoubtedly American, they do display a certain European influence. Homer often used the watercolor medium while travelling, and spent some time in the fishing village of Cullercoats, England. There, he painted scenes that reflected his love for the local lifestyle and related to his growing interest in marine subjects. His attention to detail and use of this difficult medium are obvious in his work, which features simple scenes of a simple rural life.
While serving an apprenticeship in lithography, Homer later turned to free-lance illustration and left an impressive legacy. His works capture the life of an American in its many forms and documents its history. The strength of Homer’s individual style has made him one of America’s greatest illustrators.
