William Adolphe Bouguereau paintings are popular with art collectors. His famous portraits depict the goddess Venus sitting on a seashell, surrounded by cherubs, tritons, and nymphs. Bouguereau was a student of Botticelli at the Villa Medici in Rome, and won the Prix de Rome in 1850 for his work, Zenobia Found by Shepherds on the Banks of the Araxes. He spent more than a year in Rome, where he learned to paint the Renaissance style. His works portray a mythological scene in an idyllic rural setting.

The artist’s training as an artist began at an early age, when he won the Prix de Rome at the age of 25. In the late 1850s, Bouguereau developed good contacts with art dealers and helped clients buy paintings by other Salon artists. The 1860s brought Bouguereau’s fame to England, where he decorated numerous private and public buildings. His early fame came from his decorating of public buildings and decorated many private homes.

The artist had numerous works in private collections when he first began selling his paintings. As a result, the works of Bouguereau gradually entered museum collections, with the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts acquiring some of his paintings in 1878. Other museum acquisitions included the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. In the early 1900s, wealthy American art collectors began traveling to Paris to purchase Bouguereau’s paintings.
