Despite his Danish origins, Carl Frederik Aagaard is widely considered one of the most influential landscape painters of the nineteenth century. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy under the legendary artist Skovgaard, and later worked at Roskilde cathedral. One of his best-known works, View of Mons Klint, was exhibited at the Vienna world fair in 1873. Born in Copenhagen, Aagaard’s paintings evoke a sense of the Danish countryside.

The artist studied art at the Royal Danish Academy and under his elder brother, Johan Peter Aagaard, who later became a successful glass engraver. During his formative years, Carl Frederik Aagaard also worked with decorative painters Georg Hilker and Peter Kristian Skoovgaard. Aagaard’s talent for painting landscapes was fostered by these mentors. In 1857, he exhibited his paintings at the Royal Danish Academy and enjoyed enormous success.
