Andreas Achenbach was born in Kassel, Germany, in 1815. He is one of 10 children. His father, Hermann, was a merchant who took over his father’s metal factory in Mannheim in 1816. In 1818, the family moved to St. Petersburg, where his father wanted to set up his own factory with his wife’s dowry. Andreas began receiving drawing lessons at an early age and excelled at his lessons. At age six, his teacher certified him as a “natural” and that he could do anything.

Achenbach studied the landscapes of the Netherlands and Flanders under Jacob Isaackszoon Ruisdael and Allaert van Everdingen, two seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painters. Achenbach also painted seascapes, which inspired his work. His family’s journey to St Petersburg in 1818 inspired him to paint seascapes, which would become his signature style. After returning to Germany, he spent some time in Munich before settling down in Dusseldorf. During this time, he also studied art in England, France, and Italy.

While Achenbach’s works are primarily based on his life and travel experiences, he was also a keen observer of art history. In the Netherlands, he was an early supporter of art. In 1845, he was a rich patron who bought and expanded the former Jacobi estate in Pempelfort. In Dusseldorf, he became a prominent figure in the artistic life of the city.
